The Story
Three composers, three homelands: this program traces how folk idiom becomes concert music. Manuel de Falla's Suite populaire espagnole recasts Spanish folk song for violin and piano; Edvard Grieg's Sonata No. 3 in C minor carries the harmonic colors of Norway; George Enescu's Sonata No. 3, marked "in the Romanian folk character," channels the inflections of Romanian fiddle music.
