The Story

As the nation celebrates the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026, we also mark the centennial of Route 66. This iconic highway—stretching from Chicago to California—has long symbolized the westward journey and the broader story of America as a nation shaped by immigrants. This program features music by immigrant composers such as Shulamit Ran of the University of Chicago, as well as earlier émigrés who made their homes in New York and California, alongside native son George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess.
