The Story
This program centers around one of our favorite contemporary composers, Sebastian Currier, whose Night Time for harp and violin has been featured on our programs many times. In Verge, Sebastian uses Robert Schumann's Almost Too Serious as a spring board to explore music that is right on the edge of a particular aesthetic boundary, but comes just short of crossing over into excess. The different boundaries the piece examines include Almost too Fast, Almost too Slow, Almost too Much, Almost too Little, etc. It's a brilliantly virtuosic and evocative work that requires the performers to find just the right balance of character without going overkill.
Surrounding Verge are works that themselves lean heavily into strongly defined styles - Rebecca Clarke's Dumka is the epitome of slavic folklore. Martinů's Madrigals are delightlul fantasies and Mozart's Kegelstatt Trio is the purest form of High Classicism.
